Tour de Suisse Challenge.

Insights into the life of a professional cyclist, the original route of a UCI World Tour multi-stage race and being part of the Tour de Suisse circus. That was the Tour de Suisse Challenge from 11.-18. June 2023. 1’131 km, 18’790 m gained.

As the sun rose on that fateful morning of June 11, 2023, I found myself standing amidst a sea of lycra-clad athletes and buzzing excitement, ready to embark on the ultimate cycling adventure – the Tour de Suisse Challenge. Little did I know that over the next eight days, this race would not only reveal the grueling realities of a professional cyclist's life but also weave us into the emotional tapestry of the Tour de Suisse circus.

The Tour de Suisse Challenge, a multi-stage race that traced the original route of the UCI World Tour event, promised to be an epic test of both physical and mental endurance. Covering a staggering 1,131 kilometers and conquering an astonishing 18,790 meters of elevation, we were about to push our bodies and minds to the limits.

As we set off from the picturesque Swiss town of Einsiedeln, the landscape unfurled before us like a breathtaking painting. From rolling meadows to majestic mountain peaks, each pedal stroke revealed Switzerland's natural beauty in all its glory. But beneath the surface of this scenic spectacle lay the grit and determination of the professional cyclist's life.

Over the days that followed, we battled through relentless climbs that seemed to stretch into infinity, conquered heart-stopping descents, and pushed against the ever-present winds that sought to impede our progress. The camaraderie among cyclists was palpable, forming an unspoken bond that only those who endure such challenges can understand.

But amid the camaraderie and triumph, there was a stark reminder of the inherent risks in our chosen sport. On one fateful stage, as we navigated a treacherous mountain descent, the news of a fatal accident sent shockwaves through the peloton. Gino Mäder, a talented cyclist, and a fellow rider in the race lost his life in a heartbreaking moment that left us all shaken to our core. Emotions ran high, and we were reminded of the fragility of life in the midst of our adrenaline-fueled pursuit of victory.

The tragedy brought into sharp focus the duality of the Tour de Suisse circus – the glory of victory and the somber reality of loss. It served as a poignant reminder that every cyclist, no matter their skill or experience, shares the same passion for this sport and faces the same risks.

As we pressed on, the memory of Gino Mäder stayed with us, driving us to not only compete but to cherish every moment of this extraordinary journey. The cheers of the spectators along the route, the sense of accomplishment at each stage finish, and the camaraderie with fellow cyclists turned this challenge into an unforgettable experience that transcended mere sport.

The Tour de Suisse Challenge taught me that being a professional cyclist is not just about the numbers – the kilometers ridden and the elevation gained. It's about embracing the camaraderie, navigating the highs and lows, and celebrating the indomitable spirit that unites us all. And as the final stage approached, I knew that the memories and lessons from this journey would forever remain etched in my heart, shaping my perspective on cycling and life itself.
